An introduction to Information Technology

A definition of Information Technology

Information technology is the transmission and storage of information, especially the development installation, implementation and management of computer systems with companies, universities and other organizations. (retrieved March 23rd, 2010 from the freedictionary.com).

Information technology is present today in the form of technological devices such as hardware - tangible technology such as a television and intangible technology, such as computer software and desk-drives. Information technology is used everyday by people all over the world. It has become a very common place within society. For example using the internet to communicate with people to make business arrangements, educational or social purposes.

I feel that I still have a lot to learn about information technology, especially as it is becoming more and more advanced. I feel more competent using technological devices which are less advanced for example cell phones, computers, mp 3 players and televisions. This is because I feel I have a better understanding of how they work and a short amount of time is needed to learn how to use them.

Information technology is being used in many ways in Occupational Therapy Practice. For example assistive devices like switches and computer are used to help people who have limited function in their body complete a task they have difficulty with. Activities may include group activities like a switch to operate electrical equipment an ipod used to play music in a relaxation group.

Some ethical implications that arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via information technology is the leaking of information onto places such as the internet where the information is easily accessible. This is likely to cause problems regarding people's the invasion of peoples privacy and the transmission of information without a persons permission or informed consent.

A definition of computer ethics

A definition of intellectual property

This is based on the concept of copywriting and trademarking. It is a way of protecting the original source of where the information has come from.

A definition of informed consent

Informed consent refers to making sure permission is given by the person who created the information before the information is published and made accessible to others.

I believe understanding the ethical issues regarding information technology can help us when learning to be aware of others rights and responsibilities, improve communication with those that we are working with and work towards delivering the best service to all clients when on placement and in future practice.
